IRONMAN TRAINING
Ironman training and personal Ironman coaching
Training for your first Ironman, or want to improve your time over the long distance?
At Uperform we work with individual Ironman training, where swimming, cycling, running, recovery and race strategy are planned as one whole.
Your training should not just get you through an Ironman. It should also work with the rest of your life.
How much do you need to train for an Ironman?
There is no fixed number of hours that suits every Ironman athlete. The training volume depends on your experience, your current level, your goal, how long you have until race day and how much time you can realistically spend on training.
That is why an Ironman plan should start with you, not a fixed template.
The three disciplines
Swimming
A good Ironman swim is not just about being able to swim a long way. Technique, efficiency, pacing and the ability to swim in control are key.
Cycling
The bike leg makes up a big part of an Ironman and has a major impact on the run that follows. Your bike training therefore needs to build both your capacity and your ability to pace your effort.
Running
You have to be able to run after hours of swimming and cycling. Ironman running is not just about your normal running form – it is about running efficiently on tired legs.
Ironman training with work and family
For many Ironman athletes, the biggest challenge is not motivation. It is time.
Ironman training has to work alongside work, family, travel and recovery. So we do not plan for what would theoretically be the perfect training week. We plan for the week you actually have.
Your path to Ironman
A typical programme can include:
Analysis of your starting point
Setting your goals
Planning training periods
Building up swimming, cycling and running
Progression
Load management
Race-specific training
Taper
Race strategy
Evaluation
When does an Ironman coach make sense?
A coach can be especially relevant if you:
are not sure how to structure your training
have limited time
have a specific time goal
have struggled with consistency in the past
want feedback on your training
need help balancing load and recovery
want a plan that is adjusted as you go

Frequently asked questions about Ironman training
Can I complete an Ironman if I have never done a triathlon?
Yes. Many of our athletes started with no experience and have completed a full Ironman. It takes a structured plan and enough time to build up your training gradually.
How much do I need to train per week for an Ironman?
Expect somewhere between 8 and 15 hours a week, depending on your ambitions. We adapt the volume to your goal and the time you have in your everyday life.
What does the Ironman coaching include?
Swimming, cycling, running, strength training and recovery planned as one whole, plus race and fuelling strategy for the race itself. The plan is adjusted continuously to your form and your everyday life.
Do you help with IRONMAN Copenhagen and 70.3 Helsingør?
Yes. We have had many athletes on the start line at IRONMAN Copenhagen and IRONMAN 70.3 Helsingør, and you can read their own race reports on the site.
How much does Ironman coaching cost?
Ironman coaching is part of our full triathlon coaching, which costs DKK 1,400 per month incl. VAT, or the Premium package at DKK 3,000 per month. There is no lock-in period.
Can I join a training camp?
Yes. We organise training camps, including at Club La Santa on Lanzarote and a spring camp in 2027. Read more under Training camp.
